Memoires du Comte de Grammont
WALPOLE, Horace

Strawberry Hill. 1772.
First edition. Quarto in half sheets. 225x180mm. pp. xxiii, [i, errata], 290 [3, 1bl]. The three plates called for by Hazen are present (the one opposite p. vii is loose) but there are a further three two of which are loosely inserted. Smartly bound in contemporary red morocco with borders of triple fillets and gilt roll tools framing a decorative border in blind and a central diamond pattern formed by a single gilt line. Flat spine decorated in gilt and blind and lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Corners slightly bumped, some rubbing and the occasional mark but overall in very good condition. Slightly foxed and browned but otherwise internally excellent.
On 8th January 1773 Horace Walpole wrote to William Cole: "I want to send you...a Grammont, of which I have printed only an hundred copies, and which will be extremely scarce, for twenty-five copies are gone to France". And scarce it has remained.
