This novel of small town, backwoods life in the Australian state of Victoria set in the 1890s portrays a society constrained by snobbery and tightly controlled social norms. Beneath a carapace of humour Lindsay critiques Australian society which led to the banning of the book there, not the only one of his works so treated. His interest in the erotic pagan power of the extraordinary Australian landscape led to his being dismissed as \"anti-Christian, anti-social and degenerate\". Lindsay was also a keen opponent of what Australians and New Zealanders rather brilliantly call \"wowsers\" - those strict, tiresome moral puritans who frown on such lax behaviour as drinking, smoking and gambling.
