Otherwise a very good copy.\u003cbr\u003eWilliam Carlisle's aim in this book is set out with admirably forthright clarity in the preface. He tells us that he went to hear a lecture by Mr Heineken \"in which he endeavoured to prove the non-existence of an evil spirit, called the Devil, or Satan\". This \"disgusting heterodoxy\" is, says Carlisle, \"more dangerous than a draught of the essence of hemlock\". Heineken's lecture is \"contrary to every principle of philosophy, and the plain language of the Scriptures\". Carlisle explains that his intention in this essay is to defend the doctrines of the Gospel \"against the injudicious evasions, wild reveries, bombastical assertions, and sarcastical animadversions, of those men who would rob Christianity of its glory, blast our hopes, and make this world one vast scene of misery and chaos\". An ambitious little book then.
