Slight creasing to top edge of jacket and chipping to head of spine and three small closed tears to the jacket but otherwise in excellent condition and near fine internally. A very good copy of Matthiessen's third novel which examines the fragility of goodness in the face of all-encompassing evil. Matthiessen was one of the founders of the Paris Review and the only writer to win the National Book Award for fiction and non-fiction.
