A Catalogue of Catalogues
As booksellers we spend our working lives with catalogues. We write them and then hope that people read them. We work our way through the many dealers’ and auctioneers’ catalogues that land on our desks, computers and phones each day. It is just as well then that we find them fascinating.
This list brings together a collection of exhibition and trade catalogues from the full account of the Great Exhibition (which, by happy coincidence marks its 175th anniversary this year), to the catalogue of the celebrated Georges Petit Monet-Rodin exhibition of 1889. There are two Arts and Crafts trade catalogues, van Gogh and Gauguin in Copenhagen and Barry Humphries’ copy of the Christie’s catalogue of the staggering Hamilton sale of 1882.
