The complete guide to exorcism

First edition thus. 8vo. 152x92mm. pp. [16], 1272, [46]. Bound by Hatton of Manchester (ticket on front pastedown) in nineteenth century tan half calf, cloth covered boards. Spine with five raised bands, second compartment with red morocco label lettered in gilt. Front pastedown has the bookplate of the Macclesfield Library and the shelfmark handwritten on the front free endpaper. Rubbing to edges and some wear and scuffing to spine. Internally there is some foxing and browning, particularly to the edges but otherwise a very good copy of an important book which collected, for the first time, a set of six late sixteenth century exorcism manuals written by Franciscan monks. These manuals were originally intended by the church as guides to help exorcists in the battle against the devil. However, as fighting the devil means invoking him, exorcism manuals were sometimes used as grimoires to summon up evil spirits with the result that many were added, somewhat paradoxically, to the Index Librorum Prohibitorum.
The six books gathered here are:
I. Practica exorcistarum and Dispersio Daemonum by Valerio Polidoro
II. Flagellum Daemonum and Fustis Daemonum by Girolamo Menghi
III. Complementum artis exorcisticae by Zacharia Visconti
IV. Fuga Satanae by Pietro Antonio Stampa
They cover almost everything that the working exorcist might need: how to recognise demons and demonic possession; guidance on how to conduct oneself including how to dress for an exorcism; the prayers and blessings needed to rid a house of demons and how to make herbal remedies to expel spirits from the "indaemoniati". The final work (Fuga Satanae) by Pietro Antonio Stampa who was regarded as one of the leading figures in the sixteenth century fight against the devil, is particularly celebrated, not least for its list of names for the devil and his assistants alongside details of the Biblical books needed to combat each demon.
