Pheneas was a communicating entity who became the principal spirit guide of Conan Doyle and his family. Pheneas first appeared through Conan Doyle's mother on 10th December 1922 and, as the online Arthur Conan Doyle encyclopaedia says, "he functions as the principal voice through which Conan Doyle presents a vision of posthumous life, spiritual hierarchy, coming world change, and a religion centred on love, Christ, and communication between the visible and invisible worlds". Pheneas is said to have lived in Arabia thousands of years ago, before the time of Abraham. His early appearances were through automatic communications and then through writing and finally through "semi-trance inspirational speech". Conan Doyle did not regard Pheneas (or other spirit guides) as divine but as offering a path to the divine. Pheneas was a step on the way to Christ and God, a way of receiving "new right understanding of God" and learning that "Love, not fear, must reign in each heart".
