London: Henry S. King and Co.. 1875.

On an eternal supernatural and supersensuous, life lies the basis of all pity and mercy and sympathy among men.

First edition. Two volumes. 8vo. 188x125mm. pp. ix [v], 291 [1]; [6], 241 [1bl], 36pp adverts. Publisher's brown cloth illustrated on the upper cover with a sunburst and three hands emerging from the clouds with, on the lower cover, a strange creature which seems to be a cross between a wasp and a bat. Upper cover and spine lettered in gilt with the word "Glimpses of the Supernatural" printed in a faint, ghostly fashion to suggest "the other world". Spine has had some repair and strengthening. Some light shelfwear and fading and marking to boards but otherwise a very good copy and internally excellent. Both copies have the ownership inscription of C. Davidson. Rare in commerce, only one copy appearing in the auction records, in 1913.
Frederick George Lee was an Anglican priest, very much on the high side. He founded both the Association for the Promotion of the Unity of Christendom and the Order of Corporate Reunion which sought closer links between the Church of England and Rome. His approach to religion was broadly ecumenical and The Other World indicates a broad minded approach to the supernatural and paranormal. It is essentially a compilation of stories and reports of phenomena from The Other World. The book includes chapters on Witchcraft and Necromancy, Second Sight, Spectral Appearances and Haunted Houses. But, as Lee explains, belief in the supernatural is part of an orthodox faith in God and the Divine. "The Supernatural must work in a supernatural manner, if the great Creator takes any active part in the permanent government of the order which He has been pleased to call into being".
