Mary Neff (1877-1948) was born in Akron, Ohio where she became a teacher. She joined the Theosophical Society in 1908 and three years later went to work for the Theosophical Publishing House at Adyar where she was also the private secretary to Charles Leadbeater. She worked in theosophical schools in India and as a lecturer for the Australian section of the Theosophical Society. Few people, therefore, can have been better placed to compile, from Blavatsky's writings and hitherto unpublished records, a work that is, from its first person point of view, "virtually an autobiography" containing "a great deal of new information concerning little-known periods of her life, filling in many mysterious gaps".
