Paris: Éditions Montaigne.. [1931].

Inscribed by Richet

First edition. 8vo. 188x120mm. pp. 248, [2], 6pp adverts. Original red wrappers but the upper cover and spine have faded. Creasing to upper wrapper, spine and to some of the pages, particularly towards the end. Pages uncut and last two leaves unopened. Some foxing and toning but overall a nice copy of Richet's penultimate book.
Front free endpaper is inscribed "à Madame Salter, Respecteusement, Charles Richet". Beneath this is the ownership inscription of "W.H.Salter, The Crown House, Newport, Essex".
Madame Salter was Helen de Gaudrion Verall, the wife of William Henry Salter, who was, like Richet, the President of the Society for Psychical Research. Salter was the author of two books on the subject and was clearly a close colleague and friend of the brilliant, polymathic Richet. Inside the front wrapper is the small ex libris ticket of Alan Gauld.
After a highly distinguished career in medical science, Richet began to develop an interest in the paranormal, the last few years of his life being taken up writing on the subject. L'Avenir et la Premonition is a complex, learned study of time and consciousness and concludes with the idea that the future is determined and that premonition is no more incomprehensible than monition.
