First edition. Three volumes. 8vo (222x135mm). pp. 303; 290; 284 + 4pp. publisher's adverts. Original tan blind-stamped cloth with gilt lettering on spines. Vol. 1. Spine darkened and frayed at head. Vol. 2. rubbed on joints, biro mark on upper cover. Vol. 3. Rubbed on joints and nicks at head of spine, neatly repaired. Overall, a good clean copy. Vol. 1. 'Dadie' Rylands annotations on front pastedown endpaper. Book-plate of Justin McCarthy. Stamp on title-page. A very good copy. Rylands annotations refer to a different catalogue entry for this book which has been attached to the front free endpaper with a paper clip. It states that the blue binding is more rare. He also has noted details about Justin McCarthy who was an Irish writer and politician and an MP from 1879-1900.
