All fiction is an exercise in imaginative reordering. But some fiction is a little more imaginative and reordered – disordered even. This collection of novels, short stories (and two works of non-fiction) brings together works that push the boundaries of what fiction can do and the worlds that it conjures into being. These books explore the wilder shores of the mind, the dark realm of the occult and the phenomenon of the Gothic imagination. And they challenge the norm – whether politically, socially, sexually, racially, philosophically or psychologically. Some are, perhaps, unsettling but edges are meant to make us feel uncomfortable. Monsters and weirdness come in all guises.
We have, paradoxically, tried to impose some order on the list by splitting into broad subject areas, but the borders between them are, as you would expect, porous. It is something of a mad tour and by the end you may well be wondering what the hell is going on, but we hope you enjoy the ride.
