Original beige cloth, lettered in gilt to upper cover and spine. Partially unopened. Slight rubbing to bottom corners and bumping to head and foot of spine but otherwise a very good binding. Contents in excellent, near fine condition. Thomas Runicman was a pupil of the artist William Bell Scott who was on the fringe of the pre-Raphaelite circle. His poems were written for his own pleasure and only appeared posthumously. With an introductory note by Walter Runicman.

Anonymousn.p. [Germany] . 1840s.A pretty and touching little friendship box (87x140x18mm) containing fifteen cards, leaves of papers and embroidered silk stuck to card. They are all from different people and contain a mixture of poems, drawings, paintings, or just the initials of the giver. The theme is "friendship" and the first and the last leaves contain the word "Amitié". The box is made from card, covered with pale green vellum. Top is decorated with a rococo gilt frame and the word "Souvenir" stamped in gilt. Gilded metal clasp. Housed in a green card slipcase.

In the centre is a picture (signed W. B [?] 84) of a poor mother with two young children. Above this is printed "Souvenir Programme of The Provincial Unemployed Demonstration" and either side of the picture are the texts "The profit of the earth is for all Eccles v.9" and "Labour is the source of all wealth". Below the picture are the details of the demonstration.

Prettily bound in contemporary red morocco, both covers delicately tooled in gilt with a floral border framing an inner border of drawer-handle and flower motifs and small gilt dots, with arabesque cornerpieces. A central panel is decorated with drawer-handles, arabesque cornerpieces, leafy sprays and rococo patterns constructed with tiny dotted lines. All edges gilt, turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers. Slight bumping and rubbing to corners and joints but otherwise a beautiful little binding in excellent condition.

Some of the stories are drafts with manuscript or typed amendments and some in fair copy. Each story, with its illustration, is loosely inserted into a card folder. Also present is the original pink file which contained the stories and drawings. On the cover of this is inscribed, in De harme’s hand: “Lise Deharme, 146 rue de Grenelle, Paris VII. Quleque dessins de Cocteau”. All housed in a custom made box with paper label to spine.

Floral endpapers (lacking front free endpaper). Hinges cracked but holding, corners a little worn, bumping and slight creasing to head and foot of spine.

Internally very good, some waterstaining to a few of the early leaves (1i (title page)-2ii and 2vii-3ii), marking to leaf r3. Previous ownership inscription on front free endpaper crossed out. Overall in excellent condition. Introductory text in gothic type.

At head of spine, in gilt, is the Pelican of Mercy and the motto, "Pandite Coelestes Fortae". This is the crest of James Gibson of Ingliston, Writer to the Signet whose armorial bookplate is on the front pastedowns.

Internally excellent with only very minor marking in a few places.

Lawrence produced this work for the Daily Chronicle while waiting for Lady Chatterley's Lover to start selling. At a time when a bill giving women the vote was passing through Parliament, the British newspapers were very keen on this type of material. It was discovered by Roy Spencer in the files of the Daily Chronicle.

Closed tear to E6 with no loss, some foxing but otherwise very good. An excellent copy of a rare book, ESTC recording only six copies. The Accomplished Housekeeper is an abridged version of Francis Collingwood's The Universal Cook and City and Country Housekeeper, itself a rare book, first published in 1792 with a second edition in 1797.

An utterly bizarre (and unrecorded) home-made production of which we have been unable to find another copy. At first sight, on encountering the photocopied illustrations, this would appear to be a fantasy work for rubber fetishists.
