Paris: Charles Moreau. [1925].First edition. [4], 48 black and white photographic plates of shop fronts and interiors. 323x250mm. The plates are loose and housed in a portfolio (337x255mm), backed with brown linen, boards covered with dark brown paper lettered and illustrated with a minimalist, modernist design. Ribbon ties. Lacks plate one but otherwise complete. The contents are in excellent condition, near fine. The front board has some wear and there is a tear to the linen spine. A superb collection of modernist shop designs some of which are by Herbst himself. Introductory essay by Herbst.

London: Edm. Bollifant. 1598. First edition in English. 269x190mm. pp. [8], 496. Collates: a⁴A-2R⁶ 2S⁸. Full calf, double fillet borders to upper and lower covers. Spine with five raised bands, compartments decorated in blind and gilt and lettered in gilt. Tear to title page at gutter and there is some browning and foxing and two small holes in Cc6, Ee6, with loss of two letters in each case. But otherwise a very good copy of the first appearance in English of this influential work which combines the pastoral obsessions of the Renaissance with an early form of novelistic prose.

Augspurg: Johann Christian Leopold. [1732].Oblong folio. 208x330mm. ff. [9], 83 engraved plates each with three oblong rebus stories from the Bible. Part Two. ff. [11], 84 engraved plates. 83 have three oblong rebus stories from the Bible and the final leaf title "Hieroglyphisches Beschluß Gedichte", [1]. With two exuberantly engraved title pages. The engraver is Hans Georg Bodenehr. Front pastedown has an inscription by an Anton Pruska (c1900) who was a sculptor and teacher. The first two leaves of part one have been coloured by hand. Text printed in red and black.

Lutetiae [Paris] Ex officina Roberti Stephani [Robert Estienne]. 1551.First edition. 4to. 252x166mm. pp. 357, [3]. Red morocco, single fillet gilt border, spine lettered in gilt. Gauffered edges. Marbled endpapers. Verso of front free end paper has the book label of John Sparrow and a manuscript shelfmark and, in pencil (in Sparrow's hand) the inscription "The editio princeps from the Lamoignon Library". This was one of the great French libraries belonging to generations of the Lamoignon family of statesmen, lawyers and scholars with close connections to the French monarchy.

A set of four charming watercolours (each 113x195mm) taken from Rowlandson's Dr Syntax series. "Dr Syntax losing his way". "Dr Syntax copying the wit of the Window". "Rural Sports". "Dr Syntax disputing his bill with the landlady".

Spine lettered and decorated in gilt and blind. Illustrated dustjacket in a later state with the price of 1/3net replaced with 2/- but in all other regards the jacket is the same as that of the first impression with its chilling illustration by Handforth. There is a split to the cloth at the joint with the lower cover and some fading to spine.

London: John Maxwell and Company. 1844.First edition. From the Library of the Theosophical Society in England. Two volumes. 8vo. 187x125mm. pp. xx, 315 [1bl]; xv, [ibl], 308. Publisher's green cloth, lettered in gilt to spine, with library shelfmark at foot of spine. Front pastedown has the bookplate of the Theosophical Library. Some rubbing and bumping to extremities. Internally very good. Davenport Adams is said to have been a voracious reader as a child and this book suggests wide and, it must be said, somewhat directionless reading.

Paris: Louis-Henry May. 1899.First trade edition. 8vo. 203x155mm. pp. [28], 78, [5, 1bl]. Cloth backed, paper-covered boards, lettered in gilt with a flower motif in gilt to upper cover and spine. Corners rubbed worn and frayed and some staining to the boards. Some foxing and browning but otherwise very good internally. This is Whistler's account of the legal dispute with Sir William Eden over his portrait of Lady Eden.

Paris: Hautecoeur Martinet. 1830-1835.Lithograph with hand colouring (255x190mm) by an unknown artist. Printed by Delaunois. The image, which might be from the satirical journal "La Caricature" although this is not clear, shows a young woman with two babies standing outside a priests' house. A priest has come to answer the door and she is asking him for charity. He is saying that since the revolution priest are like her (i.e. short of money). The doors open to reveal five priests drinking and cavorting.

[Vienna]: [widow of Alberti for T.Mollo]. [1799].Broadsheet (65 x 48 cm). Contemporary, probably original, pink cloth backing marbled boards. With fifty numbered woodcuts on forty three sheets, the first five sheets comprising the legend by Stabius, the last sheet also containing three woodcut inscriptions numbered fifty one to fifty three, the entire design made up from 174 original blocks and eighteen etchings by Bartsch on three sheets.

Chicago: St Luke Society. 1902.First edition. 12mo (185x120mm). pp. 75. Two facsimile letters and five photographs. Original green boards, sympathetically rebacked, upper board printed in gold, lettering fading. Corners worn but overall a very good copy. The earliest known full length confession by a female addict. Annie Meyers, describes her descent from “well balanced Christian woman” to “a haggard and wretched physical and mental wreck”. Her problems began with Birney’s Catarrh Remedy and the book traces her numerous arrests, her progressive physical decline illustrated by photographs and her eventual recovery.

Croton-on-Hudson: Menses Inc. 1984.First limited ed of 100 copies thus. Square 4to concertina-folded leaves, pp 101, illustrated throughout. A Near-fine copy with some marks to the first leaf - else crisp and clean. Housed as issued in a red brocade sleeve with a laid-on paper title label. In a very good grey slipcase with some very light wear to the corners.

Leigh-on-Sea, Essex: F.Lewis (Publishers) Limited. 1937.First edition. 325x265mm. pp. viii, 102 pages of text interspersed with 139 plates, some photographs on glossy papers, others drawings. Each plate has several examples of metalwork so this book is profusely illustrated and is a valuable reference tool. Original cream cloth letter in gilt with publisher's device stamped in gilt to upper cover. Original dust jacket with staining to spine and small chipping to head and foot of spine. Rare in the dustjacket particularly in this very good condition. Internally in excellent condition.

London: Offices of "The Studio". 1902.Eight parts in original grey wrappers 430x308mm lettered in white. With introductory essay by Frederick Wedmore, a commentary on the painters illustrated and a list of water-colour painters. Sixty six water-colour reproductions tipped in on large white heavy paper (measures 418x295 and the prints vary but are around 240x160mm) and each one protected by tissue paper on which is printed the details of the artist and the painting. All housed in a blue paper covered card folder with a label to upper cover.

London Reynolds & Sons. 1835. Box: 560x111x45mm. Playing cards: 93x64mm. Black box with marbled edges and embossed leather ties containing a set of embossed playing cards. 52 cards, no Jokers. Single-ended, square corners, with lightly impressed pattern on obverse. Foxing to cards, box in excellent condition (thought to be modern, not contemporary to the cards). The One of Clubs depicts Reynolds & Sons crest with the words 'Duty One Shilling' above the coronet.  A very rare deck of playing cards created for blind people, thought to be the earliest example of such a deck.

London: John Thomas Smith. 1815.Second edition. Folio. Title page and forty etchings (of forty eight) sold as a collection of plates. Brown full morocco, raised bands with simple double fillet and fleur de lys design in blind, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers with Van Gelder watermark. One very small mark on the upper cover and slight rubbing to corners and two small areas of rubbing to the front turn-ins but overall in excellent condition. Internally fine with the plates in superb condition and only slight foxing to the margins.

Mediolani: Ex Typographia Pauli Antonii Montani. 1733.First edition. 4to. 227x175mm. pp. [XVI], 142 [2bl], 6 folding plates with 55 diagrams. Contemporary vellum, spine with four raised bands, compartments decorated with gilt flower motif. Covers a little marked and soiled. Some foxing and browning but otherwise very good internally. An excellent copy of a scarce book of which Worldcat locates only sixteen copies worldwide. We have traced no copies at auction.

Paris Georges Petit. 1889. The first trade edition in the original wrappers. First trade edition. 8vo. 245x160mm. pp89. In the original wrappers with small repair to head of spine but otherwise in very good condition throughout. This is the original catalogue for the joint exhibition of work by Monet and Rodin held at the Galerie Georges Petit. It consists of an essay on Monet by Octave Mirbeau and one on Rodin by Gustave Geffroy together with the lists of the work by both artists.

Paris: Éditions de La Martinière. 2000.First edition. Large 4to. (335 by 255mm). pp. 431. Original black cloth with title and author printed in black on the spine. Photographic dust jacket with title and author printed in grey to upper cover and spine. There is some very minor bumping to the bottom right of the upper cover but otherwise this is in fine condition throughout. Text in French. Eight page introductory essay by Lélia Wanick Salgado setting out the aim of the book: "This book tells the story of humanity on the move".

Dublin: Printed by Graisberry and Campbell. 1814.First edition. 8vo. pp. [6], 180. Original grey-brown paper covered boards, rebacked, original paper label to spine (torn and missing left and right edges), lettered in black. Edges of boards slightly worn. Internally very good with some foxing in places, leaves uncut. Front free endpaper has ownership inscription of A.M. Perkins. Upper cover has a gift inscription (only partially legible) "To. Perkins Esqr, 7 Hereford [?] Street, Red Lion Square, London or [...] Regents Park. W.J [...ins] Compliments [.....] Dublin". Rare in commerce, the last copy appearing at auction in 1980.

London: John Murray. 1935. First edition. Signed by Wren and with his bookplate. 8vo. 187x120mm. pp. 464, [4pp publisher's list]. Original red cloth lettered in gilt to upper cover and spine. Lacking the scarce dust jacket but the striking front cover of this has been pasted onto the front free endpaper. Fading and soiling to spine and some slight foxing but otherwise in excellent condition throughout. Front pastedown has the armorial bookplate of Wren which is signed by the author.
