ANONYMOUSTwo round white cotton mats with silk fringes (190mm in diameter). In the centre of each mat is a drawing. The first shows a simian, heavily bearded man carrying a large folio volume under his arm and removing his top hat. The frame around the image is in the form of a heraldic garter on which is written "A specimen of the Darwinian race". The other mat has a drawing of a naval officer (in contemporary tail-coat) standing in front of a shaving mirror brandishing a cut-throat razor. Written on the garter is "A native trimming his beard".

Rubbing to boards and bumping to corners. Internally very good but with some browning and closed tears to K2 and K3 (which also has a tear with loss to top margin). Overall a nice copy of a light and amusing collection of poetry and prose to keep while the hours spent travelling in a post chaise.

ANONYMOUSn.p c1820s.A set of six hand-coloured lithographs on card showing the hand signals made to communicate from a distance when game shooting. Mounted on linen with two backed with marbled card so that these form the covers when folded. The folded set is housed in a marbled paper covered card slip-case. Each card measures 66x132mm and unfolded the whole is 200x265mm. The prints are in superb condition, with the colours particularly fresh and bright.

Rubbing and wear to the extremities and to spine. Internally near fine. Overall a very good copy. The preface offers a helpful history and explanation of this curious work. Printed by Wynkyn de Worde in the early part of Henry VIII's reign, it is a satirical poem of 1414 lines "in which various classes of society, chiefly of the lower order, are passed under review in rapid succession".

This volume contains the story and teachings of Jesus Christ set out in a collection of short readings. Beautifully bound in red full morocco with, on both covers, in gilt, the coat of arms of Francis I, King of the Two Sicilies. The arms are framed by a rococo gilt border. Spine decorated with an attractive rococo design and lettered in gilt. Some slight rubbing and a few marks to the spine but otherwise in very good condition. Internally excellent but with some foxing.

Part two has a pink title page dated 1910. 26 pages each with 13 small designs ranging from letters and geometric designs to nature patterns. Bound in cream cloth.

Additional engraved title page and engraved frontispiece, 16pp, title page, [2 contents], 282, two folding leaves of music, fourteen engraved plates including one coloured showing a hairy spider eating a bird. Green pictorial wrappers, worn and creased and split to upper joint. Internally very good with slight browning. The first sixteen pages contain information about seasons, lunar movements, star signs, Saint's days. The main part of the book is a collection of poems, stories and advice for ladies, for their "use and pleasure".

Unpaginated, 137 pages of maps (84 maps) and text: pp. 89, 24bl, 48 (including 4 blank pages), 14bl. The maps are beautifully drawn in pen and ink with borders in coloured ink and watercolour. Tan half calf, rebacked and corners repaired, eighteenth-century marbled paper covered boards. Raised bands, burgundy morocco label lettered in gilt "Maps J:R". Some scuffing and staining to the boards. A repair tear to the first page of text but otherwise in very good condition throughout.

ANONYMOUSc1918.Black and white photograph (238x189mm) of Charlie Chaplin and Harry Lauder signed by both of them. Light creasing and some rubbing. Chaplin and Lauder were the leading comic performers of their day. They only appeared together in one short 1918 film (which is probably when this photograph was taken). Signed photographs of the two together seem to be extremely rare and we have been unable to trace another one. Sold with this photograph is another photograph of Lauder inscribed by him to "Margo" and a postcard with a printed sketch of Lauder.

Artist, died 1898, aged 24". The image is based on a self-portrait done by Beardsley in 1896 and shows him, in profile, in the form of a bust, in white against a black background.

Anonymousn.p. [Germany] . 1840s.A pretty and touching little friendship box (87x140x18mm) containing fifteen cards, leaves of papers and embroidered silk stuck to card. They are all from different people and contain a mixture of poems, drawings, paintings, or just the initials of the giver. The theme is "friendship" and the first and the last leaves contain the word "Amitié". The box is made from card, covered with pale green vellum. Top is decorated with a rococo gilt frame and the word "Souvenir" stamped in gilt. Gilded metal clasp. Housed in a green card slipcase.

Typed pages stapled at left edge with green card covers on the first volume and orange on the second. Some marks and toning on the covers and four of the leaves have been repaired with coloured tape at the edges. An utterly bizarre (and unrecorded) home-made production of which we have been unable to find another copy. At first sight, on encountering the photocopied illustrations, this would appear to be a fantasy work for rubber fetishists.

Joints a little worn and split at the foot of the spine at the lower cover. Chipping to head and foot of spine. Paper label to spine printed with the title "The Companion". Hinges are worn and splitting in places and there is some slight soiling but overall it is in good condition.

Corners bumped and some soiling to the boards. Internally very good but with some foxing. Overall an excellent uncut copy in the original boards. A rare book, Worldcat locates eight copies worldwide and only one appears in the auction records.
