First edition. 220x150mm. pp. [10],342,[4]. Publisher's original Burgandy cloth. Lettered in silver on spine. Slightly shelf worn at extremities and slightly rubbed at head of spine. Original illustrated dust jacket is in very good condition. A small chip at head of front cover towards spine and very minor rubbing at head of spine. Inscribed in blue pen by a previous owner on free end paper "From Val and Mary – with best wishes for a merry Christmas. Dec 1958". Internally fine.
Brendan Behan's autobiographical account of his arrest at the age of sixteen for IRA activities and his three-year incarceration in one of the notorious Borstal schools. Originally banned in Ireland it is now seen as an acclaimed classic of Irish literature.
