First edition, first printing. Octavo. 185x125mm. pp. viii, 312. Publisher's blue cloth lettered in gilt to spine and front cover which is decorated with scarlet pimpernels. Rubbing to extremities and a split to the cloth at the joint with the lower cover. Head and foot of spine a little worn. Some foxing but otherwise very good. A nice copy of the first edition of this hugely popular novel credited with inspiring the genre of the "superhero". Later impressions (there were several in same year as the first) of the novel were marked as such on the title page. This copy has no such indication and, accordingly, is the rare first printing.
